Scissors
sprawled on the glass
By Suzin Daly My dining room is a place that hardly gets any use when it comes to meals. But the dining room table does have a job. It collects a variety of objects. It’s my half way house to dropping off stuff. Eventually everything does get put away. The dining table is also a worktable when I have a small project that requires papers, pencils and whatnots. The dining table has a glass top and the smoothness comes in handy when by accident the matt knife slips a little. Once in a while the glass top is empty of my paraphernalia I get a chance to use some glass cleaner, put place matt down that will never get used. Maybe place a centerpiece on the table. All for show of course. Did I mention I have cats? No, well I do. Bat, my black cat, was found as a kitten at six weeks. My latest addition, Monet, is a rescue cat that no one wanted. With cats and one glass top I am setting the scene. The story starts with scissors sprawled on the glass top after one of my projects. Once upon a time I came into the house and saw Monet staring up intently at the scissors from under the glass top dining table. She was at the far end and was so intent on those scissors she did not notice me. The scissors just so happened to be lying on some string. The string was lying across the length of the table hanging off my end. God, I really love teasing the cats. Here was a ripe opportunity. Ever so quietly I reached out and took the end of the string. Slowly pulling the string, which moved the scissors slightly. Of course the movement perked Monet up and she got very excited about the movement of the scissors. She stood up on her hind legs trying to reach the scissors through the glass. Of course the glass stopped any direct contact. Which made her try even harder standing as high as she could batting at the glass I could hear the clicking of her nails. She would sit back down on her haunches and I would move the scissors again. She would again stand up on her hind legs trying to get at them. Monet was becoming one frustrated cat. The next time she sat back down again I slowly pulled the scissors across the table continuous with Monet following from underneath. She had a very determined look. What I didn’t know Bat was watching the antics between Monet and me. Seems he was hatching a plan of his own. Bat did a full zero to sixty run – fly - leap onto the glass tabletop. Which happened to have been polished that morning. Slipped off his feet onto his side. Slide straight across 72 inches of glass went off the opposite side taking scissors, mats and a few other varieties of objects with him. I can still hear the thunk has he hit the wall on the other side. He did a slow motion slide down the wall of about 29”. To his credit he did land on all fours which where peddling I estimate about ninety miles an hour. Which made his paws a blur. As he hit solid footing he shot off in what took about two seconds of a black blur leaving the dining room. I do believe that Money was about one second ahead of him! Walt Disney couldn’t have come up with a better script! Back
